Kiran Sethi meets Former Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Mori.
On March 1st, Kiran Sethi of Jupiter International Corporation from Kobe, Japan met with Mr.Yoshiro Mori, Former Prime Minister of Japan in Tokyo. Accompanying Kiran was Mr. Y. Nishimura, a Member of the House of Representative, and Mr. Randeep Jauhaur, the Chief Executive Officer of Jamna Auto Industries, the Indian publicly listed company joint venture partner of NHK Spring Co. Ltd. from Yokohama
Mr. Mori was the first Head of State to visit Indian in 2000 after the nuclear tests were conducted. He proved to be an extremely well respected statesman by India, and received the .. ... Award from the Indian government in 2004.
During the meeting, Mr. Sethi outlined the various industry sectors in which India holds a national competitive strength on a global basis. Among those sectors are IT, metal working, pharmaceutical R&D, automotive component manufacturing. The Prime Minister encouraged Mr. Jauhar to continue to play a leading role as a joint venture partner to various automotive related projects between India and Japan. The Prime Minister also encouraged Mr. Sethi to continue to remain actively involved in facilitating the expansion of Japanese companies into the Indian for various economic sectors and cultural activities.
Mr. Mori emphasized the commonality of the strong democratic tradition of India with Japan, unlike China which is yet primarily entrenched in its communist traditions. He also reminisced about his strong ties and fond memories of Kobe, which he preferred to talk about in more depth at a later time.
Mr. Sethi pointed out that the top global companies are actively recruiting Indian management to lead their companies due to the top caliber of a well grounded education and international business experience the Indian people possess. About 15 years ago, IBM Asia and P&G Asia both based in Japan, realized the strong capabilities of Indian executives, and started a program to bring in mid-level Indian managers to train in Japan and subsequently to be sent out as country managers around the world. Due to historical circumstances, Indians uniquely espouse both the Asian values of respect, courtesy, humility, and maintaining harmony (wa wo tamotsu) while simultaneously blending their Western traits in being assertive, vocal and blunt. With a combination of these dominantly Asian and Western traits, they are able to emerge as sensitive, team oriented, focused and strong leaders of organizations.
Mr. Sethi suggested to the former Prime Minister to encourage the Japanese Government to initiate managerial exchange programs to tap into the Indian managerial prowess to benefit Japan's global and domestic activities. Mr. Mori stated that he would support such an initiative and wishes to explore this suggestion further.
Mr. Mori was impressed by Mr. Sethi's knowledge of the language and people of Japan, and expressed his sentiment with the famous phrase "Indojin mobikkuri!".
Mr. Mori has been invited to visit India on March 15th as a special speaker. The current Prime Minister Koizumi is also expected to visit India shortly thereafter on an official tour. He will be meeting both India's Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh and India's resident Mr. Abdul Kalam, during his visit.

懇談の中で、キラン氏はインドが国際競争力を備えている様々な産業についてその概要を説明した。 その中には、IT産業、薬品・医療産業、自動車・部品産業が含まれる。森氏はJauhar氏に対して、 インドと日本の自動車産業に関し、日・印の相互提携を質・量共に高めていく活動をしていくよう、 また、キラン氏に対しては、日本企業がインドの経済・文化的な活動により深く関わっていくことを 促進していく手助けをしていくことを提案した。 現在、インドと中国が世界の経済大国の道を歩む中で、歴史的・文化的面も含めて 中国と違いインドは民主主義を掲げており、その点でも日本と共通点が多い。
キラン氏はまた、世界の大企業の中でインド系の経営者を採用している動きが 目立っているということを指摘した。 インド系のビジネスマンの中には教育レベルが高く、国際ビジネスの経験が豊富な者が たくさんいるからである。 インド系の人々は歴史的背景から、アジア人特有の敬意、礼儀、謙虚さ、 人との和を保つという考えを重んじる一方で、西洋人の特性である、はっきりと自己主張をする という面も持ち合わせている。 このようにインド系の経営者はアジア人と西洋人の両方の良い面を取り入れ、 繊細かつ、チームワーク重視という、リーダーとしての素質を十分備えているという訳である。
キラン氏は森前首相に、日本が国内外の活動に恩恵を受けるよう、 インド系の経営者の能力を活用する為、経営者交換プログラムを政府が主体となって 進めていくことも有効であろうと述べた。
森前首相はキラン氏に対し、自分も神戸についても深い関わりがあり、 神戸のことももっと語り合いたいと述べた。 また、キラン氏の日本語運営能力の高さはもちろんのこと、氏が大変顔が広いことに驚き、 「インド人もびっくりだ！（笑）」と述べた。
森前総理は3月15日にインドにスペシャルスピーカーとして招かれている。 現内閣総理大臣である小泉首相も四月下旬にインドを公式訪問することになっている。 訪印中にインドの首相Manmohan Singh氏、大統領のAbdul Kalam氏と会談の予定もある。
